Our Story

Rob Mulligan, the future groom in this love story, moved to Hoboken, NJ with two of his best friends, Christian Conti and Rob Kein during the summer of 2010. He was excited to make the move, however, something was missing.  (No, not the girl.)  Football.  Rob was always a competitive athlete and wanted to join a sports league to scratch his competitive itch. He overheard the other Rob talking about joining a Zog Sports touch football team with work friends, and he wanted in.

Fast forward to September 19th - at Hoboken High School Football Field. The football team needed girl subs, and Brooke, Rob Kein's coworker and full time member of the team, knew just the person to sub - Valerie D'Ambrosi.  Val had fled the long travel times of Staten Island, NY for the much more commuter friendly Jersey City, NJ a few months earlier. Val happened to be Brooke's good friend from Kappa Alpha Theta at Lehigh University.

Rob Mulligan, ever the smooth talker, decided to break the ice with this new cute girl on the sidelines of the game. He noticed a particular logo on her sweatshirt - the initials M.S.I.T., which he thought might be the same Mckee Staten Island Technical High School he knew from Staten Island. Rob was right. This girl's name was Valerie, and she was from Staten Island! But, there was a huge deal breaker - she lived in the ghetto of Jersey City with her cousin, Kate, far away from the comfy confines of Hoboken. Rob thought he would never see this girl again.

Of course, the story does not end there. Fast forward to October 2, 2010. Val's friends decided to go to a bar in Hoboken called McSwiggans to celebrate Gina Crifasi's birthday. Coincidentally, Rob lived down the street and decided to go to McSwiggans too. While on line to the bar, Rob M saw Val's semi familiar face stroll up alone.  Val had been dropped off by Barbara Vaccaro and was meeting up with Gina and friends who were already inside bar. This was the meet cute. Both were surprised to see each other again. Val and Rob chatted a bit, clearly curious about each other. Once inside the bar, the future lovers went their separate ways again, because they were both clearly stupid.

Fear not, the next night they would meet ... again! And this time it stuck. The football team needed a sub, and Brooke, the skilled matchmaker, called in Val. This was probably the only game in the history of Rob's athletic career that he could care less about. All he wanted to do was talk to Val. However, Rob's mission was almost derailed completely when Rob K went a little too hard for coed sports and ended up taking a knee to the face. He needed several stitches. Rob M had to make a very tough decision - be a good friend to Rob K and take him to the ER, OR go and talk to Valerie at the after game happy hour. He chose Val (only after telling Rob K he was tough wrestler and that he would be OK ;-)). Val and Rob talked for hours, and they both could feel a spark. Rob confirmed the most important fact about any potential girl - She was a JETS FAN.

Rob M, doing whatever he could to mess this up, couldn't get an opportunity to ask for a phone number before Val left the bar. Thankfully, Rob got Val's contact info the next day and started chatting away.

Their first date was set for October 9th, 2010 at the Hoboken Bar and Grill. Rob M had been to the bar with Chris and Rob K a few weeks earlier and loved the food. In order to calm his nerves, he had already decided on his entree before he arrived - the cobb salad (shocker...). Rob and Val met up for their date, but when Rob went to order he discovered the restaurant had removed his favorite salad from the menu! Slightly shaken, Rob continued on, trying his best to get a cobb salad like entree.  Val thought he was a weirdo, but was kind of cute anyway.  Luckily, the waitress helped him out and got him a salad with blue cheese, chicken and bacon.

The date turned out to be a success. When Rob returned to his apartment he found Rob K and Lucy Brock hanging out. They both could see from his face that he found a winner. Val went back to Brooke's place and told her all about it.  Val and Rob saw each other the next day again at football, and again the next weekend, and basically every weekend after that to this very day.

THE END
